- Wash and lightly sand the trunk. Allow to dry completely.
- Apply two coats of Rust-Oleum® Painter's® Touch Ultra Cover Multi-Purpose Satin Brush-On in Nutmeg and let dry per the can directions. Make a stencil of the houndstooth pattern using the Mylar, marker, X-acto knife and cutting mat.
- Tape off about an 2cm around the edges of the trunk for a border. It's time for some strategy! Using a pencil and ruler, mark where the stencil will repeat and work out how many will fit inside the border. You may need to adjust the border a bit.
- Spray the back of the stencil with adhesive and stick it in a corner. Fill in the houndstooth stencil using the stencil brush and Rust-Oleum® Painter's® Touch Ultra cover Multi-Purpose Satin Brush-On in Canyon Black. Repeat until the trunk is covered. Let dry.
- Once the black houndstooth pattern is completely dry, move the tape to the edge of the border. (That's what you're painting next.) Feel free to adjust the size of the border so that it matches perfectly with the houndstooth pattern.
- Paint the border using the Canyon Black.
- For the optional keyhole, hand paint around the original hole using the bronze paint and artist's paintbrush.
- Fill your steamer with your favorite treasures.
